Lancaster III ME537 at Leeming airfield.
On 10th July 1945 flying from Leeming was eventually cancelled due to adverse weather not before this aircraft sustained damage. One aircraft took off for a cross country training flight and may have been the one that was subsequently damaged. At 15.05hrs this 429 Squadron aircraft was taxying at Leeming but at too great a speed so that when the pilot made a turn it ran off the perimeter track onto rough ground. The aircraft ran over a ditch which damaged the rudder and other aspects of the airframe.
The AM Form 1180 for this incident gives the serial as being Lancaster ME357 but cannot correct as ME357 was lost off Skegness in April 1945. Lancaster ME537 was with 429 Squadron at the time and is almost certainly the aircraft involved in this incident.
Pilot - F/O A J Joss RCAF (J/41931).
