Barracuda III MD963 at Redbrook Clough, Marsden.

On 29th July 1945 this aircraft was being flown from Donibristle to join the RNAS Station Flight at Dunino. Why it was so far south over the Pennines is unclear but the pilot may have taken the opportunity to flew south and over his home city of Sheffield. At around 13.00hrs and while flying in cloud over the Marsden area the aircraft came out of cloud, it was thought that the pilot saw the ground and attempted to turn sharply but stalled and crashed. He was killed in the crash on Close Moss, near Redbrook Clough, west of Marsden.

Pilot - Sub Lt (A) George Henry Ambler RNVR (HMS Merlin), aged 18. Buried Sheffield (Wisewood) Cemetery, Yorkshire.

The pilot was the second son of George Henry and Olive Maxwell (nee Garlick) Ambler, of Sheffield. His birth was registered in Sheffield in the last quarter of 1926. I can't find his death registration in the English death index.
