Spitfire LA211 damaged in mid-air collision, landed at Hutton Cranswick airfield.
No.1 Squadron were at Hutton Cranswick airfield from 23rd July to 17th September 1945 and undertook training activities throughout their time there with cross country flights and practice formation flying being both common. During the afternoon of 13th August 1945 a number undertook a formation flying exercise. Two Spitfires in the formation; No.2 and No.3 (LA262 and LA211) collided in the air. No.2 landed (at Hutton Cranswick?) with half the elevators and half the rudder chewed away by a propeller strike and the control column locked hard forward. No.3 landed (also at Hutton Cranswick?) with all five propeller blades damaged. The squadron records do not indicate the landings were made anywhere other than base of Hutton Cranswick.
