Dakota IV KN548 at Melbourne airfield.

The training of 575 Squadron personnel begun at Melbourne on 20th August 1945. Five days later during a basic circuits and landings training exercise at Melbourne the wing tip of this Dakota hit the ground while it was taking off. The flight was the pilot's first flight in the type. While the aircraft climbed away, on landing at Melbourne later the undercarriage collapsed and a fire broke out and badly damaged the aircraft. Despite the damage the crew escaped injury. This was at the famous Melbourne, Yorkshire; not the lesser known Melbourne, Australia as quoted elsewhere on the internet.
