Warwick ASR.1 "HG184"/ HG184 at Thornaby airfield.

On 6th December 1945 Warwick HG184 appears to have suffered from the undercarriage collapse at Thornaby airfield on landing. It was thought likely that the effect of a number of previous heavy landings had weakened the mechanism. It is claimed elsewhere to have been a 251 Squadron aircraft but I dispute this to be correct. The Thornaby airfield record book (AIR28/826) states that on this date a Warwick made a belly landing at the side of 2/9 Runway, three of the crew were taken to the station sick quarters for a check and that the medical section were called out between 15.50hrs and 16.00hrs which must have been the time at which the accident occurred. The record book also lists arrivals at Thornaby on this date and at 15.45hrs Warwick "-Q" arrived from Langham airfield.

On paper Warwick HG184 only ever served with 251 Squadron but I do not believe this to be correct. 251 Squadron had disbanded in Iceland in October 1945 so clearly two months later it must have been with another unit. In the year prior to disbanding the only Warwick that 251 Squadron appear to have ever flown operationally was HG174. I would make a suggestion that HG184 had been flown out of 251 Squadron well before the squadron disbanded, if indeed it ever served with 251 Squadron. Warwick HG148 served with 280 Squadron at Thornaby though and there may be a mix-up with the serial numbers.
