Spitfire Vb EP346 at Catfoss airfield.

At 11.10hrs on 29th August 1945 this Central Gunnery School aircraft was being flown in heavy rain and while attempting to land at Catfoss in poor visibility the pilot attempted a turn at low height to line up with the runway. During this turn the port main wheel struck the ground. On landing the port undercarriage leg collapsed followed by the starboard leg. The aircraft was to have been flown on an air firing training exercise off the East Yorkshire coast but the flight only lasted for ten minutes suggesting the exercise was cut short, probably down to the bad weather. Other landing aircraft were diverted to land at other airfields.

Pilot - F/O Frank Barnes RAF (55420).
