Spitfire K9941 at Hooton Roberts.

During the afternoon of Monday, 21st August 1939 this 72 Squadron aircraft took off from Church Fenton airfield so the pilot could carry out a training flight. At just after midday the aircraft was flying in cloud roughly between Conisbrough and Rotherham when the pilot either became disorientated or the engine failed (accounts vary). The result was the aircraft stalled and spun into the ground at Low Farm, near the village of Hooton Roberts. Sadly the pilot was killed. Spitfire K9941 was built to contract 527113/36 by Vickers Armstrong's (Supermarine) Ltd. at Woolston and was taken on charge by 72 Squadron at Church Fenton on 24th April 1939. As a result of the crash on 21st August 1939 Cat.W/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was struck off charge.
