Spitfire K9837 at Catterick aerodrome.

On 8th June 1939 this 41 Squadron aeroplane was flown on a night training exercise, when it came to landing the pilot appears to have forgotten that the aeroplane had a retractable undercarriage and landed at Catterick aerodrome with it retracted. There were mitigating circumstances but the AM Form 1180 for the incident is proving difficult to read, possibly with the pilot switching off the undercarriage warning hiorn as it interferred with the radio reception.

Pilot - F/O Howard Peter Blatchford RAF (37715).
