Whitley K7237 at Linton on Ouse aerodrome.

On Wednesday, 9th August 1939 this aeroplane overshot on landing at Linton on Ouse aerodrome while landing with just one engine running during the delivery flight that would have seen it join either 51 Squadron or 58 Squadron. It came to rest beyond the boundary hedge having received minor damage.

Whitley K7237 was built to contract 421118/35 by Armstrong Whitworth Ltd. at Baginton and was initially taken on charge by 7 Squadron at Finningley on 9th March 1938. On 30th November 1938 it was flown to 5 MU at Kemble and placed in storage. It was being ferried to Linton on Ouse on 9th August 1939 when Cat.R/FA damage resulted on landing. On 23rd September 1939 it was transported to Marshall's Ltd. at Cambridge for a repair in works and with this completed on 14th May 1940 it was taken on charge by 10 O.T.U. at Abingdon. On 20th June 1940 it was transferred to 7 B.G.S. at Stormy Down then on 21st October 1940 it was transferred to 10 B.G.S. at Dumfries. On 9th March 1941 it was assessed by 43 Group (Damage Assessment) and deemed in need of a repair on site. It returned to 10 B.G.S. charge on 2nd May 1941 but on 17th July 1941 an engine failed so the aircraft belly landed near Ruthwell, Dumfries. Cat.W/FA damage was the damage assessment that saw it struck off charge but on 21st July 1941 the wreck was sent to L.M.S. Railways Ltd. at Derby for return to produce.
