Hawker Audax K5594 near Leconfield.

On 1st January 1939 Audax K5594 of No.4 Elementary and Reserve Flying Training School, based Brough, attempted a forced landing in the Leconfield area owing to bad weather. On landing it crashed and overturned. Exactly where this occurred is not known but the wreckage was dismantled and taken by lorry to Leconfield prior to being transported for repair.

Hawker Audax K5594 was built to contract 456498/35 by A.V.Roe and Co.Ltd. at Chadderton and was initially taken on charge by 63 Squadron at Upwood on 17th March 1937. It was transferred to 105 Squadron at Harwell on 24th June 1937 but on 28th September 1937 it went into store at No.4 A.S.U. at Ternhill. On 13th June 1938 it was taken on charge by the Station Flight, Northolt and was later used by the University of London Air Squadron at Northolt. On 29th July 1938 it passed to No.24 M.U. at Ternhill and was then taken on charge by No.4 E and R.F.T.S. at Brough on 6th October 1938. It sustained damage near Leconfield on 1st January 1939 that saw a Cat.R/FA damage assessment made. On 23rd January 1939 the wreckade was transported to Leconfield by personel from the airfield and for the paperwork was held by the Station Flight, Leconfield until it was collected by Rollason's Ltd, at Croydon for a repair in works. once servicable on 2nd April 1940 it was flown to No.8 M.U. at Little Rissington. On 27th August 1940 it went to No.52 M.U. at Pengam Moors (Packing Depot) that then saw it shipped to India. It arrived at Air Depot, Drigh Road on 25th September 1940. On 3rd May 1941 it was declared damaged and was repaired on site. It later served with No.1 S.F.T.A. (India) at Ambala. On 16th January 1943 it crashed at Ambala and was struck off charge.
