Hawker Audax K1998 at or near Catterick aerodrome.
I have not yet located any contemporary documentation that confirms the details for this incident. More modern publications state that on Thursday, 11th May 1939 the engine of this aeroplane unfortunately cut out during a ferry flight and in making a forced landing at or near to Catterick aerodrome a wing struck the ground. It received minor damage. The aeroplane was on the books of No.35 Elementary and Reserve Flying Training School at the time, they had only just formed at Grangemouth ten days prior to this mishap and it appears likely it was being flown to join the training unit at the time of the incident at Catterick. It had served with 211 Squadron at Ismailia, in the Middle East, but clearly was not on a ferry flight from there to Grangemouth at the time of the mishap. Where it had been flown from is therefore not yet clear.
