Unidentified Hawker Hart or Hind near Upper Haugh, Rawmarsh.

During daylight hours of Tuesday, 17th January 1939 this aeroplane took off from Ternhill, Shropshire with the pilot undertaking some form of training exercise with No.10 Flying Training School. The visibility became poor and the pilot found himself over South Yorkshire but lost. Almost certainly running low on fuel a forced landing was made in a field on a farm owned by Mr Hobson, off Stubbin Lane, between Low Stubbin and Upper Haugh, just west of Rawmarsh. Very little if any damage occurred but the field was soft and the aeroplane became bogged down. A number of newspapers gave this incident a small paragraph write-up, some stated it was a Hart while some a Hind. In later years the fields alongside Stubbin Lane have been built over with modern housing.

Pilot - Richard Churchill. (rank not known).

It is possible that the pilot was the same Richard Churchill who took part in and survived the Great Escape.
