Piper PA-28-140 Cherokee G-TIMW near Netherthorpe.
During the morning of Sunday, 25th March 1990 this aircraft was flown on a training exercise at Netherthorpe airfield by the chief flying instructor of the Sheffield Aero Club with a pupil pilot. At 08.40hrs the aircraft took off with the pupil at the controls and whilst climbing away the instructor reduced the power to the engine to simulate an engine failure. The pupil noticed that the area straight ahead was a wooded area so attempted to turn the aircraft around toward a clear landing area. With an angle of descent rather too steep and after the turn the instructor applied power and took control. While he then attempted to climb away he was unsuccessful and the aircraft crashed around half a mile north of the airfield. The instructor sustained a serious back injury while the pupil appears to have escaped injury. At the time of this incident the aircraft was registered to William Harry Sanders, of Hucknall, Nottinghamshire.
