Piper PA-28-180 Cherokee G-BAWX at Sherburn in Elmet airfield.

During the afternoon of Sunday, 26th August 1990 this aircraft was flown from Leeds-Bradford airfield to Sherburn in Elmet airfield. At 14.15hrs the pilot attempted to land but realised that his on touching down the his ground speed was too great so attempted to apply power to take off again. The aircraft failed to climb away and it ran off the end of the runway. The wheels then ran into soft ground but the pilot then succeeded in getting airborne again. He was however unable to clear a hall hedge that was at the end of the runway and in his flight path. The aircraft flew through the top of the hedge which caused both wings to break off and it crashed into a field beyond. One of three passengers sustained a back injury. At the time of this incident the aircraft was registered to James Michael Thompson, of Spofforth, and was probably based at Leeds-Bradford airfield. It sat damaged at Sherburn for some weeks until it was taken by road to the Yorkshire Light Aircraft hanger at Leeds-Bradford in November 1990 where it was seen by an Air Yorkshire correspondent at the back of that hanger in early 1991.
