Bulldog T.1 XX517 near Great Langton.
During the afternoon of Tuesday, 25th April 1989 this No.1 Flying Training School / R.N.E.F.T.S. aircraft was flown on what the unit ORB described as a "sector recce sortie". Having taken off from Topcliffe airfield it was
being flown on a training exercise over the Northallerton area when the pilot became disorientated when the aircraft flew into a snow storm. He climbed into cloud then could not read his instruments. He then received radio
instructions to climb and then abandon aircraft. He subsequently left the aircraft and landed safely. The aircraft then crashed and disintegrated in a field near Whitwell Farm, Great Langton. The twenty four year old pilot
was transported to hospital at Catterick Garrison with minor injuries but later returned to his parent Linton on Ouse airfield. The field the aircraft crashed into was known locally as "Aeroplane Field" due to the First
World War links to flying that occurred there.
Pilot - Lt Zursee Andreas Lucas. German Navy.
