Avions Mudry Et Cie Cap-21 G-BLZZ at Crosland Moor.
On Sunday, 4th September 1988 a fly-in was held at Crosland Moor airfield and G-BLZZ was one aircraft flown in from Sherburn in Elmet airfield. At 14.45hrs it was being flown in company with a Pitts-Special that was probably the one noted in Air Yorkshire magazine as carrying no registration. The Cap-21 joined the landing circuit and was given permission to land. Slightly earlier Glaser-Dirks DG.400 G-BLRM was given permission to take off but its pilot was forced to stop on the runway when its wing became entangled with weeds. The pilot of this powered glider left the cockpit to free his aircraft and, once back inside, he then made a radio transmission that he was taking off. It appears that he did not hear the ground controller requesting he maintained his position (ie, not to take off) so then attempted to take off just in front of the Cap-21. Just as the DG.400 became airborne it was struck from above and behind by the Cap-21 and both aircraft then crash landed.
G-BLZZ had been registered to Diana Marilyn Britten, of Chobham, Surrey, on paper until January 1989 when it was registered to Anthony James Edward Smith, of Hillam Hall, Leeds. Air Yorkshire magazine stated that G-BLZZ was flown in from Sherburn so it seems likely that the aircraft was with Mr. Smith who base it at Sherburn prior to the registration date.
