Pierre Robin DR.400 Chevalier G-BAZC at Crosland Moor airfield.

This aircraft was registered to Mr David Dufton, a trustee of the Sherburn Robin Group, of Huddersfield. On Saturday, 21st May 1988 he flew it from Sherburn in Elmet airfield to Crosland Moor airfield with his father-in-law travelling as a passenger. Both men lived in the Huddersfield area. While in the area of Crosland Moor the pilot was instructed to land on the grass part of the runway clear of the tarmac earlier on a normal approach. At 12.00hrs the pilot attempted to land on the grass but aircraft was travelling too quickly, combined with a downward slope to the grass, the pilot was unable to stop it on the airfield. He attempted to apply power and take off again and while the aircraft cleared the stone wall at the end of the runway and Sands House Lane, it then swung to the right and dropped into a field beyond. The right wing then struck a wall and it flipped over. It came to rest very close to the embankment created around one of the opencast quarrying sites that border the airfield. Both occupants escaped injured. Despite being badly damaged, the aircraft was later rebuilt.
