Piper PA-32R-301 Saratoga SP G-ROLF at Apperknowle airfield.

For clarity, I have included this incident in a list of "Yorkshire" incidents but this incident occurred in Derbyshire. Elsewhere on the internet it is incorrectly claimed that this occurred in Yorkshire. The Yorkshire boundary is over two mile north of where this incident occurred at Bentley Farm, also known as Apperknowle airfield. The old Coal Aston airfield was in Yorkshire but this incident did not occur there.

At 17.00hrs on 25th November 1985 this aircraft landed at Coal Aston airfield as part of a business flight after the pilot had flown over the runway and also made a circuit of the airfield to check for obstructions. After touching down several cows ran across in front of the aircraft's path and the aircraft collided with two of them. The pilot brought the aircraft to a halt soon after but the collision had damaged two fuel tanks in the wings which begun to leak. One of the cows was later put down. The aircraft was registered to Mr Rolf Werner Burchhardt, of Sheffield, and he probably housed the aircraft at Apperknowle airfield. He was the Chairman of Sheffield Aero Club in the 1970s when the club was asked to leave Netherthorpe airfield. His son was piloting G-ROLF when this accident occurred.

Pilot - Mr Selwyn Michael Burchhardt.

3 Passengers - Names unknown.
