Hi-Way Sky Trike 330 G-MJXY near Wombleton.

During the evening of Wednesday, 13th July 1983 this microlight aircraft was being flown by a student pilot who was undertaking a series of circuits of Wombleton airfield while his instructor watched from the ground. He made two successful circuits of the airfield but on the third the aircraft encountered turbulence. at 19.30hrs, the pilot lost control and the aircraft side-slipped into a field of standing barley. The pilot sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash.

According to the registration records this aircraft was registered to Charles Russell, of North Berwick from 31st May 1983 to 22nd August 1983. The registration changed to Ms Lilias Sally Weir, of Northallerton on 9th September 1983. Which one of these two registered owners actually had it when this incident occurred at Wombleton in July 1983 is not confirmed, often the registration dates came some time after a change of ownership occurred. Windsports Centre Ltd. would be based at Wombleton airfield in the 1980s and it may well have been a leased aircraft by their business.
