Jet Provost T.5a XW288 at Linton on Ouse airfield.

The annual Wright Jubilee Aerobatic Competition was due to have been held on 24th May 1982. The competition involved instructors of the RAF jet pilot flying schools' competing against each other, with the Commanding Officer of each flying school naming one of their instructors to take part. The pilot selected to represent No.1 Flying Training School was required to practice his routine and during the afternoon of Monday, 17th May 1982 he flew XW288 over Linton on Ouse airfield. Toward the end of the display practice the pilot attempted to make a barrel roll but when it was inverted, the roll rate slowed and the pitch increased. The aircraft's nose then dropped and despite the pilot's efforts to pull the aircraft out of the dive, it struck the ground at high speed at a flat angle. The aircraft broke up and the fuselage came to rest against the corner of one of the large hangers on the airfield. The pilot did not eject and was killed as a result of this incident.
