Gnat T.1 XP539 near Leeming airfield OR Ainderby Steeple.
Some proper information regarding this incident is required to gain a fuller picture as to what happened. What is known is that on 22nd May 1979 the aircraft suffered a blockage in the fuel system resulted in the engine failing close to Leeming airfield. Both pilots ejected at low level and the aircraft either crashed near Gatenby Grange Farm, on the southern side of Leeming airfield OR near Ainderby Steeple, between Leeming airfield and Northallerton. Both locations are some distance apart and clearly it didn't crash at both.
The aircraft is stated elsewhere to have been a spare Gnat used by the Red Arrows with the pilots landing at Leeming to visit Leeming's Training Command HQ. It is also claimed that it was landing at Leeming to take part in a Wright Jubilee Trophy aerobatics competition, also that the pilots were undertaking a circuit training exercise with the Central Flying School at the time. Also with it either on the approach to land when the problem occurred and also whilst taking off.
