Schleicher Ka.2B BGA.2311 near Markington.
On Monday, 7th May 1979 during a winch launch for a glider at the Watergate and Wath Soaring Club, near Markington, the winch cable broke on launch. The glider had reached around sixty feet in the air at the time and it then dived into the ground near Haddockstones Grange. The pilot was injured whilst the passenger was sadly killed. The glider was owned by a syndicate of fourteen men who were mainly all bus drivers with Leeds Metro. The Watergate and Wath Soaring Club site was owned by Mr Arthur Bell and was used between 1979 and 1982.
Pilot - Mr George Price DFC, aged 58. Injured.
Passenger - Mr Patrick James McGrath, aged 49, of Leeds. Burial location unknown.
George Price was awarded the DFC flying Lancasters with Bomber Command in WW2.
