Socata ST.10 Diplomate G-AYVV near Woolley.
The registration of this aircraft was transferred to David and Margaret Orriss, trading as D.M.J.Travel, on 2nd September 1977. They lived at Shelley, Huddersfield and probably based it at Crosland Moor airfield. Two years later, the owners had left the aircraft in the Bournemouth area in the Summer of 1979, probably for servicing or a repair. On 29th September 1979 they drove to Bournemouth to collect it and planned to fly it back to either Crosland Moor or Leeds-Bradford airfield. On Sunday, 30th September 1979 the aircraft was flown north by Mr Orriss while Mrs Orriss followed in their car but in the Sheffield area the aircraft developed engine problems at 2000ft. The pilot was able to contact Leeds-Bradford airfield by radio to inform them he was landing and he then made a forced landing in a field near High House Farm, around a mile west of Woolley. Not far from the Woolley service station, off the M1 motorway. Unfortunately the aircraft broke the undercarriage and after crash landing a small fire then broke out. The pilot escaped injury and the fire brigade was soon on the site who put out the fire.
Pilot - Mr David Anthony Orriss.
