Piper PA-23-160 Apache G-APVK near Dewsbury.
On 25th July 1976 this aircraft took off from Sherburn in Elmet with the intention to overfly some land at Emley that the pilot had recently bought. Also with the pilot were two younger people who were taken up as passengers. The aircraft unfortunately suffered a partial engihe failure over West Yorkshire while flying at around 2,000 feet and began to lose height. The pilot attempted to make a forced landing in a field near the River Calder and the sewage works roughly between Dewsbury and Ossett but it came to rest upside down in a rather "wet" part of one of the circular filter-beds in the sewage works treatment tanks. It was badly damaged. The pilot, who was from Wakefield, and two passengers, who were both from Barnsley, escaped serious injury though all were taken to hospital.
The aircraft was registered to I.B.C. Civil Engineering (Wakefield) Ltd at the time and was probably based at Sherburn in Elmet. The pilot of the aircraft was the owner of this company.
