Jet Provost T.3 XN558 near Kirby Hill.
On 29th June 1971 this No.3 Flying Training School aircraft was being flown in the Dishforth area when it flew into a flock of birds (either on take off from or on the approach to land at Dishforth). Some of these birds were ingested into the engine intake which caused the engine to fail. Unable to return to the airfield at Dishforth, or fly back to base at Leeming, the pilot ejected and the aircraft went on to crash near Kirby Hill.
Pilot - F/Lt C S Hall RAF.
The name F/Lt C J Thompson, a flying instructor, is also quoted as being involved.
