Rollason Druine D.62B Condor G-AXGY at Bessacarr.
On 25th February 1971 this aircraft ran out of fuel on flight from Redhill to Doncaster despite having stopped to refuel at Challock en route. It then crashed whilst the pilot was attempting to force land in a field at Bassacarr, just short of Doncaster airfield. The aircraft was destroyed and one of the two men, a Doncaster Gliding Club instructor, who was flying it was killed. The other man, the same club's ground engineer, was taken to hospital in Doncaster with severe injuries.
The aircraft was registered to Mr Norman Herbert Jones, of Surrey, but I am certain that he leased aircraft to various clubs across the country. G-AXGY was probably leased by the Doncaster Gliding Club. He also owned G-AXGT which crashed at Edlington in July 1971.
Pilot - Mr Brian Edward Dalby, aged 31. Burial location unknown.
Pilot - Mr Robert Lionel McLean, aged 22. Injured.
Mr McLean later served at the York Gliding Centre Ltd as an engineer and club chairman.
Brian Dalby was born in Leeds in April 1939 and had served in the RAF in the 1960s (quite probably in the Training Branch as a gliding instructor).
