Piper PA-22-108 Colt G-ARLH near Darrington.

On 2nd June 1971 towards the end of flight from Compton Abbas, Dorset to Leeds-Bradford airfield with two business men on board the engine of this aircraft failed. The pilot made a forced landing in a field of standing corn near Darrington and the aircraft nosed over after a late attempt was made to avoid a hidden ditch. No injuries reported but the aircraft suffered damage to the nose and a wing. The pilot was an owner of "O and J House Ltd", agricultural engineers, of Blandford, Dorset, and the passenger was an employee of the company.

Pilot - Mr Osborn House. Of Blandford, Dorset.

Passenger - Mr Arthur Laurence. Of Bridport, Dorset.

There is gap in the registration history around when this incident took place. Mr Francis Arthur Wait, of Orrell, Lancashire, owned it until 23rd September 1970. It was next registered to Mrs Gillian Coghlan, of Blandford, Dorset, on 24th December 1971. Given that the pilot of it when it crashed near Darrington was also from Blandford then it must have gone there earlier than December 1971.
