Piper PA-24 Commanche 250 G-ARDL near Cowling.
On 4th August 1970 one of the eventual passengers of this aircraft Mr Murray had been playing cricket for a Rest of the World Eleven that had just beaten an England Eleven at Headingley, Leeds while the others were commentating for television and radio. The aircraft's owner was a former England cricketer and was also the pilot of the aircraft. Another passenger was a former South African cricketer. The aircraft was due to fly from Leeds-Bradford to Southport where all were due to take part in a two day match for the International Cavaliers team against a Jamaican touring side at the Birkdale ground at Southport due to begin the day after this accident. Shortly after taking off from Leeds-Bradford the aircraft's propeller ran away causing the aircraft to vibrate badly. The pilot opted to attempt a forced landing around seven miles from Keighley with the wheels up on farmland near Cowloughton Farm, Cowling. Two of them received minor injuries but all three continued their journey by taxi.
