Slingsby T.66 Nipper G-AVTB near West Tanfield.

On Saturday, 8th June 1968 this aircraft was flying from Sutton Bank, where the owner and pilot based the aircraft, toward Masham. As part of the flight the aircraft was flying low near West Tanfield when it struck a tall tree on the edge of a clump of trees near Hall Farm, around two miles southwest of the village. It then crashed into what was a boggy area within the trees. One of the wings broke off and the aircraft was badly damaged. The pilot, who actually lived at Village Farm, West Tanfield, sustained injuries that saw him taken to Northallerton Friarage Hospital. His wife stated to journalists that the crash location near the village was purely a coincidence that it occurred there. He was a member of the Yorkshire Gliding Club and also the Yeadon Aero Club.

Pilot - Mr Gerald Daniel Pybus. Injured.

According to the UK aircraft registration records, the registered owner at the time of the crash was John Grey Faber, of Harston Hall, Grantham. He owned the aircraft between 8th February 1968 and 1st May 1970 but a newspaper report that relates to the crash printed an interview by the pilot's wife that stated her husband had bought the aircraft in early 1968. The damage was later repaired and the aircraft was rebuilt.
