Chipmunk Mk.22A G-ARDW near Netherthorpe airfield.

During the evening of Saturday, 11th May 1968 this aircraft crashed into a cornfield near Netherthorpe airfield while the two pilots were practicing for a planned display due to take place by the Sheffield Aero Club there on 3rd June 1968. After crashing a fire broke out and both the pilot and passenger were killed. The airshow was subsequently cancelled.

Pilot - Mr Donald Frederick Ashton, aged 48. Of Sutton on Trent, Nottinghamshire. Burial location unknown.

Pilot - Mr William David Davis, aged 29. Of Eckington, Sheffield. Burial location unknown.


Mr Ashton owned a barge transportation business at Carlton on Trent while Mr Davis was a reporter for the Sheffield staff of the Daily Mail.
The aircraft was owned by Mr Frank Morrell, of Roche Abbey Mill, Maltby, Rotherham.
