Vulcan B.2 XH563 at Finningley airfield.
On 22nd February 1967 this 230 Operational Conversion Unit aircraft was in the process of taking off from Finningley airfield when some warning lights came on in the cockpit. The pilot abandoned taking off and attempted to deploy the tail chute to slow the aircraft. Unfortunately the chute failed to deploy and while the pilot applied maximum braking this was not enough to prevent the aircraft from running off the end of the runway into the overshoot area. Once onto soft ground the wheels sank and the aircraft became bogged down. The aircraft was retrieved in high winds and heavy rain but minor damage to the wheels and the brake units was later found to have occurred.
Pilot - G/Cpt Arthur Griffiths AFC RAF (131642).
