On 6th August 1965 this 19 Squadron aircraft was about to be flown and while the pilot was in the cockpit sat waiting for take off clearance he opened the canopy to ventilate it owing to the heat. He eventually took off from Leconfield airfield but forgot to lock the canopy. As it picked up speed the canopy broke off, damaging the hinge and the leading edge of the fin. The pilot was able to remain in control and made a normal landing.
