DC-3 Dakota IV G-ANTD at Leeds-Bradford airfield.

During the morning of Wednesday, 17th February 1965 this aircraft was due to have been flown from Derby to Glasgow but with a scheduled landing to be made at Leeds-Bradford. Visibility at Leeds-Bradford on this morning was reduced owing to low cloud. The runway was being extended at Leeds-Bradford at the time and while the aircraft set down on the longest runway available, the brakes were unable to stop the aircraft in the remaining available length available. With the aircraft fast approaching the incomplete section workmen scattered. The pilot attempted to swing the aircraft to avoid it running into the working area but the undercarriage then collapsed and it came to a halt on its belly when it struck a mound of earth. All twenty eight passengers and crew escaped injury with some being helped by the runway workmen who then ran back to the crashed aircraft. It was felt that owing to standing water on the runway that the tyres had aquaplaned and that the braking was ineffective. The aircraft was named "Dovedale" and was owned by British Midland Airways, based at Castle Donington.
