Whirlwind HAR.10 XJ428 at Wilsthorpe.

This helicopter was on charge with "B-Flight" 228 Squadron who were based at Leconfield. On Tuesday, 10th September 1963 it was operating on a training flight in Bridlington Bay when the engine began to fail. The pilot managed to fly at low level back over land, crossing the coast a couple of miles south of Bridlington before the engine failed. Shortly after crossing the coast he then attempted to make an auto-rotational forced landing near Wilsthorpe but the tail hit ground first. The helicopter continued for a further 200 to 300 yards, jumped a fence though then came to rest upside down. Two of the crew crawled out but a third was trapped inside. Witnesses entered the helicopter and carried him out. He was initially taken to Bridlington Lloyd Hospital, then a second helicopter arrived and took him to Hull Royal Infirmary. The aircraft was badly damaged, wreckage was scattered over three fields. It was not repaired though part of it was converted into Ground Instructional Airframe 7821M.
