Auster V J/1N Alpha G-AHHT near Yeadon airfield.

On Friday, 20th May 1960 the pilot of this aircraft, of Yeadon Aero Club, was attempting to land at Yeadon airfield when the pilot decided to fly an overshoot. Unfortunately the aircraft was badly damaged when it struck a telegraph pole. Whether it then crashed, or remained in the air and subsequently landed normally is not known.

Auster Alpha G-AHHT was built by Auster Aircraft Ltd. at Rearsby as a J/1 and was registered to them on 11th May 1946. Over the next few years it was registered to F.H.Wheaton at Chard, S.Ball & Son Ltd. at Bristol, C.Cruickshank at Bristol and V.W.Lea, of London before being registered to Whitley (Rishworth) Ltd on 4th May 1954 and was operated by the Yeadon Aero Club, at Yeadon airfield. In 1957 it was converted to J/1N Alpha status. It was damaged at Yeadon on 20th May 1960 and was probably repaired at Yeadon. On 1st May 1963 it was registered to A.J.L.Hug and was also based at Yeadon. On 25th May 1964 it went to Hug, Pullan and Lamb, it was initially based at Yeadon then later moved at Dishforth. In April 1973 it went to Suffolk Gliding Club, at Whatfield. Since this date the aircraft has had several civilian owners. In 2007 it went into storage at Barton Ashes, Hampshire. In 2017 it was registered to South Downs Auster Group and was still airworthy when this webpage was created.
