NA.39 "Buccaneer" XK491 not damaged in the air, landed at Elvington airfield.
I do not know enough about the history the Buccaneer type. The prototypes were originally called the NA.39 and XK491 was one of the prototypes, I understand that the Buccaneer name may have come after the date
of this incident. The aircraft was used for air to air refuelling trials and was loaned by Blackburn Aircraft Ltd to Flight Refuelling Ltd, at Elvington for this purpose.
On 29th October 1959 this prototype Buccaneer was undertaking flight refuelling trials with a Vickers Valiant tanker aircraft but when they linked their probe to the basket on the end of the tanker's fuel
line, it broke off and remained attached to the Buccaneer's refuelling probe. The Buccaneer made a normal landing at Elvington and appears to have sustained no damage. The identity of the slightly damaged Valiant
is not known but this could realistically have landed back where it was based.
The same Buccaneer made a landing at Elvington on 15th February 1960 after suffering engine failure in flight.
Pilot - Name unknown.
