Javelin FAW.4 XA722 at Leconfield airfield.

At this stage in 1959 72 Squadron were in the process of converting from the Meteor to the Javelin and had also just completed a move to Leconfield from Church Fenton. On 7th July 1959 a fire in the starboard engine jet pipe occurred soon after taking off from Leconfield airfield. The pilot shut down the starboard engine and managed to make a safe, single engine landing a short time later back at Leconfield. It was found that a technical defect in starboard engine jet pipe was the cause of the fire. The aircraft appears to have not been repaired following this incident.

Pilot - Master Pilot Arthur Frederick Gundry RAF (1807072).
