Vampire T.11 XH296 at Dishforth airfield.

This aircraft was on the books with the Station Flight, Middleton St.George at the time of this incident, when, on 10th June 1958 it was being flown by a lesser experienced pilot together with a more experienced one undertaking a flying check assessment of him. While making an approach to land at Dishforth airfield a bang was heard and then engine then ran down. The more experienced pilot took control and made a hurried landing on the runway at Dishforth but touched down two thirds of the way along the concrete. He then raised the undercarriage to bring the aircraft to a swift halt. The lesser experienced pilot received minor injuries. The check pilot was later commended for his actions in what could have been a far more serious incident.

Pilot - F/Lt G G Davies. Slightly injured.

Check Pilot - F/Lt M R Martin RAF.

F/Lt Davies was probably the same pilot who later ejected from Hunter XF940 on 13th October 1961 over Farnborough.

Back to yearly selection.
