Unidentified Meteor at Thornaby airfield.

Around this period 33 Squadron were in the process of exchanging their Meteors for Javelins and this was due to have been well underway by the end of August 1958. Some Meteor flying training during August 1958 was carried out by pilots who had undertaken a lesser amount of conversion training. While the squadron was based at Leeming it appears to have used Thornaby for some of the flying training. Very basic details suggest that on 1st August 1958 the nosewheel of this unidentified 33 Squadron aircraft collapsed on landing at Thornaby airfield, the aircraft sustained some damage which was later repaired. The aircraft's identity is quoted elsewhere as being WF815 but this cannot of correct as WF815 was destroyed in a crash near Howden on 1st March 1954. By August 1958 33 Squadron had very few Meteors left and what they did have appear to have been only Meteor NF.14's.
