On 28th February 1954 this 608 Squadron aircraft was landed with the wheels retracted at Thornaby airfield after the starboard undercarriage leg jammed in flight.

Vampire VV691 was built to contract 6/ACFT/1387 by English Electric Company at Samlesbury and was delivered to 5 MU at Kemble on 10th May 1949. It remained in store until being allocated to the Middle East Air Force in December 1949 when it was flown to Manston prior to a flight out to Deversoir, Egypt in January 1950. It was then taken on charge by 249 Squadron at Deversoir on 26th January 1950. It then passed to 213 Squadron at Deversoir on 12th February 1951. On 28th March 1951 it was flown to 107 MU at Kasfareet. The aircraft was then taken on charged by 32 Squadron, at Shallufa, on 14th September 1951, this unit then went to Deversoir on 27th January 1952. It was flown back to the UK in May 1952 where it initially went to 27 MU at Shawbury. Next, it was taken on charge by 608 Squadron at Thornaby on 21st May 1953. As a result of the incident at Thornaby on 28th February 1954 the damage was initially assessed as having Cat.4R damage, this was the inspected by 60 MU who upgraded the damage to Re-Cat.5(c) and the aircraft was struck off charge on 29th March 1954.
