Meteor F.4 VT231 at Neasham airfield.

On 3rd August 1954 this No.4 Flying Training School aircraft was being flown on a training exercise that involved the pilot making a roller landing at Neasham airfield. The aircraft touched down on the airfield and as he applied power to begin to lift off again the aircraft suffered an engine failure at the critical stage which saw the aircraft swing off the runway. The forces exerted on the undercarriage saw it collapse and it then caught fire. The unit was based at Middleton St.George but had the use of Neasham airfield as a relief landing ground; this was the airfield previously known as Croft. A fire engine from Middleton St.George on its way to the incident crashed through a brick wall and overturned injuring one of the firemen, Norman Hodgson.
