Oxford University Air Squadron held their Summer Camp at Woodvale over three periods between 20th June and 1st August 1954. Their aircraft were flown up to Woodvale from their home airfield of Kidlington. Toward the end of the first period camp on 1st July 1954 one of their Harvards was being flown on an authorised low flying exercise which took the aircraft over West Yorkshire and while being flown low in the Brotherton area the engine cut out. The pilot made a wheels up landing on soft ground next to the A1 road around a mile south of Brotherton but the aircraft was badly damaged. This is the location given in newspaper reports which would probably have been closer to Ferrybridge but perhaps on the Brotherton side of the River Aire. It was felt that the pilot had operated the fuel tank selection incorrectly which caused the engine's supply to run dry. The O.U.A.S. held some training at Patrington during this summer and the aircraft may have been heading there from Woodvale at the time of the incident.
Pilot - P/O Christopher Luke Ionides RAF (3134060).
