Meteor F.8 WH277 damaged in the air, landed at Finningley airfield.

On 3rd May 1953 this 616 Squadron aircraft was flown on an air to ground firing exercise on the Skipsea ranges and while returning to base at 3,000 feet the canopy disintergrated. The pilot went on to make a normal landing back at Finningley airfield where the unit was based and it was repaired. An investigation found that the cause was already known but a modification had yet to be incorporated to this aircraft.

Pilot - F/Lt Bob Jones DSO RAF (182962).


Bob Jones was awarded the DSO for service with 15 Squadron, Gazetted on 2nd February 1945. He was killed on 29th March 1955 while test flying a Rolls Royce Lancaster when it crashed near Hucknall.
