Meteor F.8 WE962 near North Howden.

Exactly why this 19 Squadron aircraft was in the air on 17th October 1952 and how it then ran out of fuel is unclear. The aircraft was carrying a ventral fuel tank which was jettisoned two miles before the pilot went on to make a forced landing in a beet field Caville Wood, around mile north-east of North Howden. The damage only appears to have been assessed as repairable. It was so common for wheels-up Meteor forced landings to be write-offs. The pilot was new in to the squadron and only arrived on 29th September 1952 from 226 OCU. The woodland has since been felled and the land ploughed out for farming.

Pilot - F/O David Turgoose RAF (2600782).
