Meteor NF.11 WD761 near Lower Dunsforth.

On 2nd December 1952 this 228 Operational Conversion Unit aircraft took off from Leeming airfield at 19.50hrs with the crew briefed to undertake a night time training exerise involving interception of other aircraft. Forty five minutes after taking off and while flying at 20,000 feet both engines suffered flame outs. The pilot remained in control and descended down to 8,500 feet where both he and his navigator baled out. The aircraft went on to crash between Lower and Upper Dunsforth, south east of Boroughbridge. Both airmen must have landed reasonably close together in the Marton-cum-Grafton area. After being collected by a senior officer they were taken to the village pub Ye Old Punch Bowl for a pint. It was found that the pilot had flown with the fuel supply being used from the main tanks first rather than using the fuel in the wing tanks first and then switching to main tanks. He had then failed to check the fuel gauges until the engines cut out.

Pilot - Sgt Michael Frederic Felgate Stone RAF (3045757).
