Meteor F.4 VW275 damaged in the air, landed at Driffield airfield.

During the morning of Wednesday, 16th July 1952 this 203 Advanced Flying School aircraft was flown on a formation flying exercise with other aircraft. During a formation change this aircraft collided in the air with Meteor WH130 over the Ottringham area, to the east of Hull. The pilot of WH130 lost control, his aircraft crashed with fatal results near Grange Farm, south of Ottringham. The pilot of Meteor VW275 appears to have remained in control and after circling the area for a time landed safely with minor damage, probably at Driffield where the unit was based.

The later inquest stated that the collision occurred while the aircraft were flying at around 350mph. The pilot named below gave evidence at the inquest and the Hull Daily Mail stated that he "inspected his plane when it arrived back (at Driffield?) and one part was slightly bent. He came to the conclusion that the plane had been in an air collision." This could suggest that he was the pilot of VW275 or that he was just an officer who was detailed to check for damage to the aircraft after it had been landed by someone else. Researching the officer, he was a flying instructor so may well have been the pilot of VW275 at the time.

Pilot - Name unconfirmed (possibly F/Lt Stanislaw Wandzilak DFC RAF (500039)).
