Meteor F.4 VT181 near Dunsdale.

On 9th June 1952 the pilot of this No.203 Advanced Flying School aircraft undertook a training exercise that involved some flying off the Yorkshire Coast. He was based at Driffield and had become lost whilst out to sea, when he came back in over land again he thought he was south of Flamborough Head. He made radio contact and was told of his rough location which was much further north than he believed. He received the order to fly to Middleton St.George to land but did not have enough fuel to reach the airfield. At 09.10hrs he made a belly landing at Dunsdale, north of Guisborough, after running out of fuel. The pilot survived although the aircraft was badly damaged.

Pilot - P/O Michael Desmond Shirley Towler RAF (583955).

I understand that this Meteor came to rest in one of the fields shown in this photograph. It had apparently crossed over the Marske to Guisborough road passing through the road's boundary hedges.

Michael Towler was appointed to a commission in the RAF on 17th May 1951 (with his period of service to count from 6th December 1950) to the rank of Acting P/O on probation from Cadet Pilot, probably after training at Cranwell. He was confirmed in the rank of P/O on 9th February 1952 but the London Gazette states that his commission was terminated on 19th September 1952.
