On 3rd April 1951 a second period of seven days continuous training as part of an Easter Camp began at Church Fenton airfield by members of the Leeds University Air Squadron and fifteen cadets were part of this group. The following day one of the cadets was undertaking a flight, probably between Church Fenton airfield and Sherburn in Elmet airfield and while making an approach to land at Sherburn in Elmet airfield the aircraft's undercarriage struck a tree. The aircraft then fell, crashed on the edge of the airfield and overturned. The eighteen year old pilot was taken to hospital in Leeds with multiple injuries.

Colin Normanton was born on 27th May 1932 and lived on Wetherby Terrace, Burley Road, Leeds at the time of the crash in 1951. He would marry in Leeds in 1956 but died there in 1985.
