On 14th January 1941 Vampire VF340 of 608 Squadron suffered engine failure whilst in the air, the pilot returned to land at Thornaby airfield but crash landed on the runway. A Cat.4R damage assessment was made against it five days later, it was later collected by 60 MU in March 1951 and taken to DeHavilland Ltd at Hatfield for a repair in works.
