Wellington T.18 RP414 near Carthorpe.

On Monday, 26th February 1951 this No.228 Operational Conversion Unit aircraft suffered a propeller spinner fly off in flight and as it came adrift it struck the fuselage next to the cockpit, the cockpit window was broken and cut the pilot's face. The pilot made a swift belly landing near Brickyard Farm, Carthorpe but the crash broke the back of the aircraft. Newspaper reports briefly mentioned this incident but made special mention to Dr Julius Bielby who was riding as a member of the Bedale Hunt when he witnessed the crash landing around half a mile away. He galloped to the crash site to offer assistance to the pilot who was found crawling out through a hole in the fuselage with head injuries.
